His father's diary entries and letters from his mother took the filmmaker to places in Belgium, France, Tunisia, Germany, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, where his father was deployed as a Wehrmacht officer from 1942 to 1945. Images of the original locations merge with the father's texts to create haunting inside views of the war and its destructive power on the soul. In 2017, Boekel and his brothers speak for the first time about the profound impact this war had on their family and their lives. Wars leave traces in people's souls that last for generations.
